The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has concluded major preparations for the forthcoming governorship election in Ekiti State, with over one million registered voters expected to participate in the exercise scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.
Chairman of INEC, Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Tuesday during the Second Quarterly Consultative Meeting with Leaders of Political Parties in Abuja, assuring stakeholders that all arrangements were on course for a smooth, credible and transparent election.
Amupitan revealed that the final register for the election contains 1,059,360 registered voters, following the addition of 66,664 new voters through the Continuous Voter Registration exercise to the state’s 2023 voter register of 987,647.
He added that the Commission invalidated 2,103 cases of double registration as part of efforts to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
The INEC Chairman said logistics deployment, election technology configuration and the training of ad hoc and permanent staff were progressing according to schedule, expressing confidence in the Commission’s readiness for the poll.
According to him, all 2,445 polling units across the 16 local government areas of the state will open simultaneously at 8:30 a.m. on election day.
He noted that the Commission had intensified preparations to ensure that sensitive and non-sensitive materials arrive on time at polling centres, while election officials are adequately trained to handle the exercise efficiently.
Amupitan also reassured political parties, candidates and voters that INEC would deploy the necessary technology and operational resources required to guarantee a credible election.
The governorship election is expected to serve as a major test of the Commission’s preparedness ahead of the 2027 General Election, with political parties already intensifying campaigns across the state.
Meanwhile, the INEC Chairman reiterated the Commission’s commitment to conducting elections that meet constitutional requirements and reflect the will of the electorate.
He urged eligible voters in Ekiti State to turn out peacefully and participate in the democratic process, assuring them that the Commission remained focused on delivering a free, fair and credible governorship election.
