Parents have been encouraged to preserve mother’s tongue and work towards a society that embraces cultural diversity.
Students and Teachers in African Church Comprehensive High School Alagbaka Akure, decked in native attires in the spirit of the mother’s tongue day.
The principal of the school Mrs Olajumoke Jide said language plays crucial roles in both education and sustainable development, serving as the main communication channels for knowledge dissemination and cultural preservation.
She noted that there are about 8,324 languages globally, yet several face the threat of extinction as a result of globalisation and evolving societal dynamics.
She said the day is set aside to recognize the value of linguistic diversity and take measures to protect these languages for future generations.
The principal opined that no society can survive without culture, hence the need to embrace it, calling on all stakeholders to protect and promote the Yoruba language.
The School Administrator maintained that culture is heritage and must not be allowed to go into extinction.
Beyond academic benefits, mother tongue education fosters self-worth and cultural identity, therefore all hands must be on deck to preserve indigenous Languages.
The event featured cultural dance from the school as they dressed in cultural Yoruba way of dressing to commemorate the day
Some of the teachers and other invitees were presented with awards for their contributions to the development of their various schools.
They appreciated the principal Mrs Olajumoke Jide for turning around the school and encouraged her not to relent on her efforts in bringing the needed development to the school
