Where competence, integrity and performance become the criteria for leadership, governance improves and communities prosper.
As the people of Owerri Federal Constituency prepare for the 2027 House of Representatives election, they are presented with an opportunity to elect a representative whose public life has been defined by service rather than self-interest. Dr. Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the Labour Party candidate, brings to the race a rare combination of academic excellence, professional accomplishment, humanitarian service, executive governance experience and unwavering commitment to community development.
Born in Emeabiam, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu has remained firmly connected to her roots. Although her professional career and public service extended beyond Imo State, she has consistently demonstrated that genuine leadership begins with remembering one’s people and using every available platform to improve their lives.
Her educational background reflects an extraordinary commitment to lifelong learning. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, followed by a Master’s Degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture from the University of the Philippines, Visayas. Rather than resting on decades of professional success, she returned to academia and, in 2024, obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Aquaculture from the Federal University of Technology, Akure. Her doctoral research on solar-powered aquaculture systems addressed issues of food security, technological innovation and sustainable agricultural development – subjects of growing importance in Nigeria and across Africa.
Her professional career has been equally distinguished. She served meritoriously in the Federal Department of Fisheries before becoming a successful entrepreneur in aquaculture. Few candidates seeking public office possess such a combination of scientific expertise, administrative experience and entrepreneurial success.
Yet qualifications alone do not define leadership.
After surviving breast cancer, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu transformed personal adversity into national service by establishing the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN). Through free screening programmes, public education campaigns, advocacy and support for patients, the organisation has improved awareness of breast cancer and encouraged early detection, helping countless Nigerian women seek timely medical intervention. Her work stands as a compelling example of leadership driven by compassion rather than personal ambition.
As First Lady of Ondo State between 2017 and 2023, she demonstrated that influence can be translated into measurable impact. Rather than limiting herself to ceremonial engagements, she championed programmes in maternal and child healthcare, women’s empowerment, youth development, education, the elimination of female genital mutilation and the fight against gender-based violence.
Among her most enduring legacies is the BEMORE Empowered Initiative, which has equipped thousands of young women with practical skills in coding, digital technology, renewable energy, entrepreneurship and leadership. At a time when youth unemployment remains a major national challenge, investing in human capital is one of the most sustainable forms of development.
Perhaps the most compelling evidence of her character, however, lies in the fact that she never forgot her ancestral home.
While serving as First Lady of Ondo State, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu continued to invest in Emeabiam and the wider Owerri Federal Constituency. Through the Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu Foundation, she established the Ada Emeabiam II Health Centre, expanding access to quality healthcare for residents. She facilitated the construction of the Ihiagwa–Eziobodo–Emeabiam Road through collaboration with the Niger Delta Development Commission, improving connectivity and stimulating local economic activity. She also extended educational and technology-based empowerment programmes to young women from Imo State, ensuring that opportunities created under the BEMORE Initiative benefited her own people as well.
Her concern for the welfare of the constituency has also been evident in her response to growing insecurity.
Recognising that communities cannot thrive without safety, she donated brand-new motorcycles and financial support to community vigilante groups across the constituency to strengthen grassroots security and improve their operational effectiveness. These interventions reflected a practical understanding that protecting lives requires more than rhetoric – it requires tangible support for those safeguarding local communities.
Following the tragic death of vigilante operative David Udukauba Onyegbula, who was killed while defending Umuguma Ancient Kingdom against armed criminals, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu personally visited the community to mourn with the traditional ruler and the bereaved family. She also used the occasion to call for a citizen-driven approach to tackling insecurity, encouraging communities to work together with lawful authorities to protect lives and property. The visit carried added significance because the late vigilante had earlier been one of the beneficiaries of the motorcycles she donated in support of community policing.
Leadership is often revealed not during moments of celebration, but in moments of crisis. Her actions demonstrated empathy, accessibility and a willingness to stand with ordinary people in difficult times.
In recognition of her contributions to community development, Emeabiam honoured her with the prestigious traditional title of Ada Emeabiam II, acknowledging her sustained commitment to the progress of her people.
Today, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu seeks to represent Owerri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives under the platform of the Labour Party.
Her candidacy presents voters with a clear choice. They can choose familiarity over performance, or they can choose a candidate whose achievements are already visible in healthcare, education, women’s empowerment, youth development, infrastructure, humanitarian service and community security.
The National Assembly requires legislators who can shape policy, influence national discourse and attract development to their constituencies.
