The Ondo State chapter of the Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT) has described the late elder statesman, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, as a symbol of purposeful living, integrity and selfless service whose contributions to education, politics and democracy will remain enduring.
Fasoranti, a prominent educationist, political leader and former leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, died on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the age of 100.
In a tribute issued on Wednesday and signed by its Director of Media, Ojo Oyewamide, GMT said the death of the centenarian marked the end of a remarkable chapter in the history of Akure Kingdom, Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.
The organisation, however, said his long and impactful life deserved to be celebrated, noting that he witnessed and participated in several defining moments in Nigeria’s political evolution, from colonial rule and independence to military rule and the restoration of democracy.
According to GMT, Fasoranti distinguished himself not only as a witness to history but also as an active contributor to national development through education, public service, political engagement and democratic advocacy.
The organisation highlighted his contributions to education, recalling that he established Omolere Nursery and Primary School in Akure, Akure High School and St. Frances Academy, Igoba, Akure, which he founded in memory of his late wife.
It said his commitment to education and years of teaching helped shape the lives of generations of students, reflecting his belief in the power of knowledge to transform society.
On his political career, GMT described Fasoranti as a committed disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose progressive political philosophy emphasised education, social welfare, accountability and the development of the people.
It noted that his involvement in the Action Group during the First Republic and subsequently in the Unity Party of Nigeria reflected his commitment to those ideals.
The movement also recalled his appointment as Commissioner for Finance under the administration of the late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, the first executive governor of the old Ondo State, between 1979 and 1983.
It said Fasoranti served at a period when the state pursued ambitious development programmes, including free education and rural development, adding that prudent financial management was crucial to the success of those initiatives.
GMT further acknowledged his contributions to the political development of the old Ondo Province and the emergence of Ondo State in 1976, describing the creation of the state as a milestone that opened new opportunities for administrative development and the realisation of the people’s aspirations.
On his leadership of Afenifere, the organisation said Fasoranti emerged as the group’s recognised leader following the death of Pa Abraham Adesanya, providing direction to a movement deeply rooted in the political history and aspirations of the Yoruba people.
It added that despite internal disagreements within the organisation and challenges in the nation’s political environment, he remained an important voice on Yoruba unity, constitutional reform, true federalism, social justice and democratic governance.
The movement also praised his involvement in pro-democracy activities, including those associated with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), describing him as one of the Nigerians who stood for constitutional government during the struggle against military dictatorship.
Beyond his national political profile, GMT described Fasoranti as a distinguished son of Akure whose contributions to education, governance and community development strengthened the kingdom’s standing in Ondo State and Nigeria.
The organisation said his life was anchored in Christian faith and service to humanity, noting that the values of discipline, integrity, compassion, patience and selflessness associated with his public life remained worthy of emulation.
It urged Nigerians to honour the late elder statesman not merely by recounting his achievements but by preserving the values that defined his life and public service.
GMT extended its condolences to the Fasoranti family, Afenifere, the people of Akure Kingdom, the Ondo State Government and people, the Yoruba nation and Nigerians who valued his contributions to national development.
The statement prayed for the repose of his soul and for God’s comfort for his family, associates and all those affected by his death.
