The Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT), Ondo State chapter, has paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, describing June 12 as a symbol of courage, sacrifice and the triumph of the people’s will over oppression.
In a Democracy Day statement issued on Friday by its Director of Media, Ojo Oyewamide, the group said the annual commemoration serves as a reminder that democracy in Nigeria was achieved through years of advocacy, resilience and commitment by patriots who stood firmly in defence of justice, freedom and popular sovereignty.
GMT noted that Ondo State occupies a prominent place in the history of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, having produced notable figures who played critical roles in resisting military rule and championing democratic governance.
The group specifically paid tribute to the late elder statesman and former Governor of old Ondo State, Pa Michael Adekunle Ajasin, for his leadership of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which became a rallying platform for pro-democracy forces during one of the country’s most turbulent political periods.
It also recognised the contributions of prominent Ondo indigenes, including Oba Olu Falae, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, the late Chief Ade Adefarati, the late Dr. Olusegun Agagu, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, Chief (Mrs.) Mobolaji Osomo, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, Chief Sehinde Arogbofa, the late Wumi Adegbonmire, Senator Olorunnimbe Farukanmi, the late Alex Adedipe and Pastor Ifeanyi Odili, among others.
According to the group, these individuals demonstrated exceptional courage by standing on the side of democracy when doing so came with significant personal risks.
“Their sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic institutions Nigerians enjoy today. They risked comfort, careers and personal safety in pursuit of a nation founded on justice, accountability and the rule of law,” the statement said.
While honouring the legacy of past democratic icons, GMT also commended the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for what it described as his dedication to public service and commitment to sustaining the progressive ideals associated with Ondo State’s political history.
The group said Tunji-Ojo’s leadership style reflects the values of service, innovation and people-centred governance that have continued to define the state’s contribution to national development.
“Through innovation, dedication and purposeful leadership, Dr. Tunji-Ojo represents the enduring relevance of the values of service and good governance for which many of our democratic heroes stood,” GMT stated.
The organisation further stressed that democracy extends beyond the conduct of elections, noting that responsible citizenship, transparent leadership, accountability and active public participation remain essential to strengthening democratic institutions.
It urged Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to renew their commitment to national unity, democratic ideals and the collective pursuit of peace and prosperity.
“The greatest tribute to our democratic heroes is to continue building a society where justice prevails, opportunities abound and the dignity of every citizen is protected,” the statement added.
GMT wished Nigerians a happy Democracy Day and called for sustained efforts toward deepening democratic governance across the country.
