Chief Olusola Oke, SAN, has described the death of the leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, at the age of 100 as a monumental loss to the Yoruba nation and the progressive political family in Nigeria.
Oke, in a condolence message dated October 21, 2026, said the late elder statesman embodied the ideals of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and remained a symbol of integrity, purposeful leadership and commitment to Yoruba cultural values.
He said although Fasoranti’s attainment of the age of 100 was a source of gratitude to God, his death had left a profound void in Yorubaland and the progressive political family.
According to Oke, Fasoranti was a custodian of the Omoluabi ethos, whose principled approach to public life reinforced the importance of vision, integrity and purpose in politics.
He noted that the late Afenifere leader played a pivotal role in sustaining unity within the Yoruba family during challenging periods, adding that his commitment to the people’s cultural heritage remained unwavering throughout his lifetime.
Oke also recalled Fasoranti’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic struggle, describing him as a courageous advocate of democracy who stood against military dictatorship and oppression.
He said the late elder statesman, as a disciple of Awolowo, an educationist and a respected voice in national affairs, made significant sacrifices in the struggle for democratic governance.
“ When it was risky to speak, Baba spoke. When it was dangerous to stand, Baba stood. The democracy we enjoy today bears his footprints,” Oke said.
The legal practitioner further described Fasoranti’s leadership of Afenifere as a defining period in the organisation’s history, noting that he upheld its principles of true federalism, restructuring and good governance.
He said Fasoranti’s leadership was characterised by wisdom, candour and uncommon integrity, which earned him respect across political divides.
Oke added that even at 100, the late Yoruba leader remained committed to offering guidance, counsel and prayers for the progress of Yorubaland and Nigeria.
While commiserating with the Fasoranti family in Akure, the Ondo State Government and people, members of Afenifere worldwide and the Yoruba people at home and in the diaspora, Oke said the late elder statesman’s legacy of service and honour would endure for generations.
On behalf of his family, political associates and the progressive family in Ondo State, Oke prayed for the peaceful repose of Fasoranti’s soul and for God to grant the bereaved family and his numerous admirers the strength to bear the loss.
