Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, has announced the death of its former Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oladele Awobuluyi, who passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
In a condolence message, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Tomola Obamuyi, described the late scholar as a visionary administrator, distinguished linguist and one of the institution’s foremost academic icons whose contributions laid a solid foundation for the growth and development of the university.
Prof. Obamuyi noted that Prof. Awobuluyi, who served as Acting Vice Chancellor between June 2009 and January 2010, introduced far-reaching academic and administrative reforms that strengthened the then young institution and positioned it on the path of excellence.
He added that the late professor also played a pivotal role in the establishment and growth of the university’s Department of Linguistics, earning recognition as a leading figure in the field of linguistics both in Nigeria and internationally.
According to the Vice Chancellor, the university will always remember Prof. Awobuluyi for his visionary leadership, exceptional scholarship, unwavering commitment to academic excellence and invaluable contributions, which continued even after his retirement.
Prof. Obamuyi described his passing as a great loss to the university community, saying the institution has lost an astute administrator, an outstanding academic, the father of its Department of Linguistics and a pillar of university governance.
He extended the university’s heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and for God to grant the family the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
