Dr. Betty Chioma Anyanwu-Akeredolu is a distinguished aquaculturist, public health advocate, social entrepreneur, gender activist, development practitioner, author, and politician whose life has been dedicated to service, empowerment, and transformational leadership.
Born in Emeabiam, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu has built an exceptional career spanning over four decades in fisheries and aquaculture, public health advocacy, women and youth empowerment, sustainable development, and community service.
A highly accomplished academic and professional, she holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (2024), a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Education and Promotion from the University of Ibadan (2022), a Master of Science (MSc) in Fisheries with specialization in Aquaculture from the University of the Philippines, Iloilo (1986), and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Zoology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1977).
Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu began her professional career with the Federal Department of Fisheries under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, where she served with distinction from 1978 until her retirement in 2006 as Chief Fisheries Officer. Throughout her career, she demonstrated exceptional expertise in fisheries management, catfish breeding, fingerling production, and aquaculture development. In recent years, her research has focused on innovative and sustainable fish production systems, particularly the application of solar energy in aquaculture through low-cost Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).
As an entrepreneur and fisheries consultant, she has successfully managed fish farming enterprises and provided consultancy services to numerous individuals, organizations, and institutions, helping to strengthen Nigeria’s aquaculture sector and improve food security.
Driven by a profound commitment to public health and social development, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu founded the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) in 1997 following her personal experience as a breast cancer survivor. Through BRECAN, she pioneered one of Nigeria’s most impactful breast cancer awareness and advocacy movements, promoting early detection, public enlightenment, screening programmes, and support for cancer patients and survivors. Her relentless advocacy has contributed significantly to improving breast cancer awareness across Nigeria.
In 2009, she established the Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu Foundation (BAAF), a development-focused organization committed to improving the welfare of vulnerable populations through interventions in healthcare, accelerated birth registration, maternal and child health, education, and community development. Through strategic partnerships with national and international organizations, BAAF has implemented impactful programmes benefiting thousands of women, children, and underserved communities.
As First Lady of Ondo State from 2017 to 2023, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu brought innovation, vision, and purpose to public service. She championed numerous initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women, girls, widows, youth, and vulnerable populations. Her tenure was marked by bold advocacy for gender equality, education, public health, entrepreneurship, and social inclusion.
One of her most celebrated achievements is the establishment of the BEMORE Empowered Girls Foundation in 2017. Through this groundbreaking initiative, thousands of girls have received training in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), coding, solar technology, entrepreneurship, leadership, self-development, and life-enhancing skills. BEMORE was designed to bridge the gender gap in STEM+E (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Entrepreneurship) while preparing young girls to thrive in the digital economy and become future leaders.
A passionate advocate for girl-child education and women’s empowerment, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu has consistently promoted increased female participation in leadership and politics. She remains a strong voice for gender equity and inclusion, encouraging women to actively engage in governance and decision-making processes.
Her development interventions have also focused on the promotion of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programmes, menstrual health management, maternal and child health, accelerated birth registration, literacy development through Reading is Fun and Spelling Bee competitions, and the welfare of widows through the establishment of support structures and comprehensive widow databases.
Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu’s outstanding contributions to public health advocacy, women and girl-child empowerment, community development, and humanitarian service have earned her numerous national and international recognitions. Among her notable honours are recognitions from Harvard University, USA, and the University of Heidelberg, Germany, for her pioneering work in breast cancer awareness and advocacy. She was named Most Supportive First Lady (2021) by The Sun Nigeria in recognition of her relentless efforts in raising breast cancer awareness and her commitment to the development of women and the girl-child. She also received the Most Valuable Governor’s Wife Award (2021) from the Nigeria Assembly Orientation and Awards for her impactful leadership and service to humanity.
In 2019, she was honoured with the prestigious Platinum Award as Champion of Humanity by the Nigerian Tribune in recognition of her transformative initiatives promoting women’s empowerment, girl-child advancement, and breast cancer advocacy. She was also recognized as Woman of the Year by the African Women Industrialization Awards for her exceptional contributions to social development, leadership, and the advancement of women.
Beyond advocacy and development work, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu is actively engaged in politics and nation-building. She is widely respected for her principled leadership, courage, integrity, and commitment to grassroots development. Her political philosophy is rooted in the belief that governance must directly improve the quality of life of citizens through inclusive policies, education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and sustainable development.
In recognition of her distinguished achievements, philanthropy, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the development of her people, the traditional rulers and monarchs of Owerri Federal Constituency conferred on her the revered title of Ada Owere I. This prestigious honour reflects the immense trust, confidence, and affection reposed in her by the people and traditional institutions of Owerri. As Ada Owere I, she proudly embodies the rich cultural heritage, values, and aspirations of Nde Owerri, serving as a bridge between tradition and progress while championing development, inclusion, and social advancement.
Fluent in English and Igbo, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu continues to inspire generations through her scholarship, advocacy, mentorship, philanthropy, and public service.
