The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has issued a stern directive to officers of the Nigeria Police Force, emphasizing strict adherence to constitutional provisions on pre-trial detentions.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP reminded officers that respecting the fundamental rights of individuals in custody is both a legal and moral duty. He cited Sections 34 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which guarantee the right to human dignity and personal liberty.
The police chief cautioned against any form of unlawful or prolonged detention, warning that such practices erode public trust and confidence in the police. He stressed that any officer found violating these constitutional rights would face severe disciplinary action.
“Adherence to legally stipulated detention periods is not just a statutory obligation but a fundamental aspect of upholding the dignity and rights of individuals,” the IGP stated.
Egbetokun called for a culture of accountability within the Force, urging officers to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in their dealings with the public. He added that prioritizing human rights is essential for fostering stronger relationships between the police and the communities they serve.
“The Nigeria Police Force under my leadership is committed to policing that respects human rights and the rule of law,” the IGP affirmed.
The statement further emphasized the Force’s dedication to ensuring that all individuals in custody are treated lawfully and with respect, reflecting a broader vision of a police institution that is both effective in maintaining law and order and dedicated to protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens.
