The Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Prof. Tomola Obamuyi, has commended the Ondo State Governor and Visitor to the institution, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for approving and releasing more than ₦1 billion as a Special Intervention Fund to offset outstanding salary arrears owed to university workers.
Obamuyi described the intervention as a significant step towards resolving the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), AAUA chapter, expressing optimism that the development would lead to the immediate restoration of academic and research activities at the institution.
In a statement, the Vice-Chancellor said the governor’s intervention underscored his commitment to strengthening higher education in Ondo State and improving the welfare of university staff.
According to him, the release of the funds reflects Governor Aiyedatiwa’s determination to maintain a stable academic calendar and ensure that students complete their programmes without avoidable disruptions.
“This special intervention demonstrates His Excellency’s unwavering commitment to the growth and development of our university, as well as the welfare of its workforce. It reflects his determination to sustain a stable academic calendar and ensure that our students complete their studies without unnecessary disruptions,” Obamuyi said.
He assured the governor that the university community would reciprocate the gesture by remaining committed to its core mandates of teaching, research and community service, while promoting peace and stability on campus.
The Vice-Chancellor also reaffirmed the institution’s support for the governor’s vision of advancing academic excellence and sustainable development in the state.
Obamuyi expressed confidence that the intervention would facilitate the suspension of the ongoing strike and pave the way for the immediate resumption of academic activities.
The AAUA chapter of ASUU commenced an indefinite strike on July 10, 2026, over the non-payment of two months’ salary arrears, a development that halted academic activities at the state-owned university.
The latest intervention by the Ondo State Government is expected to ease tensions between the university management and the academic union, while providing relief to staff and students affected by the industrial action.
