Former First Lady of Ondo State, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has applauded the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, SAN, for demonstrating what she described as “balanced leadership” in resolving the recent high-profile airport controversies involving Ms. Comfort Emmanson and Fuji music star, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1).
The incidents, which generated heated public debate and dominated headlines in recent weeks, centered on allegations of unruly behaviour by both individuals during boarding procedures.
While Emmanson was reportedly handed a stiff sanction after a confrontation with airline officials, KWAM 1’s case was perceived by many as being treated with leniency, sparking accusations of double standards.
In a statement on Wednesday, Anyanwu-Akeredolu said the decision to grant clemency to both parties sends a strong signal that while aviation safety and security remain non-negotiable, disciplinary measures must reflect fairness and compassion.
“Given earlier perceptions that Ms. Emmanson’s treatment was harsher than that of KWAM 1, this resolution restores a sense of equity and reaffirms that constructive public engagement can positively influence governance,” she said.
The former First Lady, however, stressed that the episode should serve as a wake-up call for the aviation sector.
She urged airlines, particularly Ibom Air, where the first incident occurred, to invest in robust customer service training that prioritises empathy, effective communication, and conflict de-escalation.
“At the same time, passengers must familiarise themselves with, and strictly adhere to, aviation safety rules and regulations. Mutual respect between airline staff and travellers is essential if we are to avoid similar flashpoints in the future,” she added.
Anyanwu-Akeredolu concluded by calling on stakeholders to ensure such incidents do not escalate into national spectacles again, noting that “a professional, safety-conscious, and customer-friendly aviation industry is in everyone’s best interest.”
