***Both Bills pass First Reading in the Senate
A bill seeking to upgrade the Government Technical College, Owo, to a Federal College of Education (Technical) has passed First Reading at the Nigerian Senate.
Similarly, the Petroleum Industry Act (Amendment) Bill 2025, also sponsored by Senator Jide Ipinsagba representing Ondo North Senatorial District, scaled through First Reading during plenary.
The bill on the Owo Technical College aims to revive the almost neglected institution in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, and reposition it as a federal institution capable of providing quality technical education.
Speaking to journalists, Senator Ipinsagba expressed concern over the level of infrastructural decay at the school, which he described as once a pride of the community. He stressed the need to restore its former glory and bring affordable, practical education closer to the people.
He noted that the proposed Federal College of Education (Technical) would provide full-time courses in technology, applied sciences, commerce, arts, social sciences, humanities, and management, while also facilitating research in the development and adaptation of techniques.
The bill also makes provisions for the appointment of a Provost and other administrative officials, as well as for the effective discipline and governance of the institution.
Established in 1988, the state-owned Government Technical College, Owo currently offers courses in Electrical Installation & Maintenance Works, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Radio/Television & Electronics, and Refrigeration & Air Conditioning.
On the Petroleum Industry Act Amendment Bill, Senator Ipinsagba said it seeks to amend the Petroleum Industry Act No. 6 of 2021 by mandating quarterly environmental audits of upstream petroleum operations.
The goal, according to him, is to enhance accountability on environmental impacts and ensure better funding for the economic development of host communities.
He added that both bills are people-oriented and align with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, focused on improving lives and empowering citizens, particularly the youth of Ondo North Senatorial District..
