The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State has called on the National Assembly to make provisions for the online, real-time transmission of election results in the proposed 2026 Electoral Bill, describing the measure as critical to ensuring credible polls in 2027.
The party said embedding electronic transmission of results in the nation’s electoral framework would go a long way in restoring public confidence in the democratic process, which it noted remains fragile.
Speaking on a current affairs programme on Breez 91.9FM in Akure, Ondo State, the SDP State Chairman, Barrister Gbenga Akinbuli, stressed that real-time transmission of results should be treated as a priority reform in the ongoing review of the country’s electoral laws.
According to him, the integration of technology into the electoral system is no longer optional but imperative to safeguarding the sanctity of the ballot.
Akinbuli argued that electronic transmission of results would significantly reduce opportunities for manipulation, enhance transparency and ensure that votes cast by citizens are accurately reflected in final outcomes.
He further maintained that strengthening the electoral process is fundamental to deepening Nigeria’s democracy, describing credible elections as the bedrock of accountable governance and sustainable national development.
The SDP chairman also expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of development in Ondo State under the current administration, citing what he described as insufficient progress in critical sectors of the state’s economy.
He urged the government to prioritise key areas such as the judiciary, education, security and healthcare, noting that meaningful investment in these sectors is essential to improving residents’ welfare and rebuilding public trust in governance.
