Poll: Two dead, vehicles destroyed in Ondo

Two persons have been shot dead after a violence erupted during the Saturday’s House of Assembly election in Ondo state.

The Politico reports that the incident happened at Oba-Akoko in Akoko South West local government area of the State.

Though the members of the political parties involved in the violence were not known as at the time of filing this report but it was gathered that the violence erupted when some armed thugs were attempting to attack a collation centre in the town.

He said: ” The incident happened when some thugs attempted to attack the collation centre, they were shooting sporadically to scare the INEC officials away at the centre but the combine team of soldiers and policemen prevented them from gaining entrance into the centre . So the security men engaged them in a shootout.

“Later, the security men also chased them shooting sporadically , it was at that point that two of them were shot dead while one was injured. ”

The Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO) of Ondo State Police command, Femi Joseph confirmed the killing to our correspondent.

Joseph explained that the youth attacked the security agents on their way to the collation center, adding that two vehicles belonging to the security were damaged and set ablaze.

The PPRO noted that about twenty persons had been arrested in connection with the incident.

“They ambush security agents and they began to shoot at them and I think one or two of the youth were gun down. They destroyed police vehicle and burn it down. They equally attempted to burn a Police station in the area.

They were taking results to the Collation center and in the process these youth attempted to disrupt it but our men stopped them.

“They were shooting sporadically at the police and the police won’t look at those persons,” the police spokesman said.

According to an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, the incident occured between youth and the security agents when results were being moved to the Collation center in Oba-Akoko.

He said: ” The incident happened when some thugs attempted to attack the collation centre, they were shooting sporadically to scare the INEC officials away at the centre but the combine team of soldiers and policemen prevented them from gaining entrance into the centre . So the security men engaged them in a shootout.
