More than 1,000 residents of Akure and its environs on Wednesday benefitted from a free medical outreach tagged “Jigi Asiwaju”, organized by the Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT), as part of efforts to improve community health and rekindle public trust in governance.
The outreach, which held at the headquaters of Grassroots Movement for Tinubu in Akure, featured free eye screening, distribution of medicated eyeglasses, and other essential health services.
The initiative is in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at delivering direct impact to Nigerians at the grassroots.
Director-General of GMT, Hon. Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, described the medical outreach as one of the movement’s social intervention programmes aimed at complementing government efforts and deepening support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Our commitment as a movement is to connect with the people at the grassroots and make a tangible difference in their lives. What we are doing here is to support the vision of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who believes that good governance must be felt directly by the people.”
Yusuf-Ogunleye, expressed deep appreciation to the Minister of Interior, Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, for his unwavering support towards the success of the programme.
“We cannot thank Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo enough,” he said. “His dedication to the well-being of his people reflects the kind of leadership Nigeria needs, compassionate, responsive, and visionary. With leaders like him, the promise of the Renewed Hope Agenda becomes more than just a slogan, it becomes a living reality.”
He described the outreach as a demonstration of President Tinubu’s people-first leadership philosophy:
“Today, we’re not just giving out eyeglasses, we’re giving people back their vision, their dignity, and their hope. This is the kind of progress you can see, touch, and feel.”
Religious and community leaders at the event also commended the initiative.
The Chief Imam of Akure, Alhaji AbdulHakeem Yayi Akorede, described the outreach as timely and life-changing, saying “This is what leadership is about, touching lives without discrimination. May Allah reward those who have brought this light to our people.”
The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ondo State Chapter, Rev. Father Anselm Ologunwa, echoed similar sentiments, calling the programme a unifying act of love.
“Whether Muslim or Christian, rich or poor, health is our common need. Today, the message is clear: the people matter, and better days are possible.”
Mrs. Funmilayo Falana, GMT Woman Leader and facilitator of the outreach, emphasized the importance of empowering women, the elderly, and low-income earners through accessible healthcare.
“When we care for the eyes, we help our people see new opportunities. This is a step towards restoring not just vision, but also hope in governance and humanity,” she said.
Grateful beneficiaries, many of them elderly and market women, received free medicated glasses and health checks. Those diagnosed with more serious conditions were referred for further medical attention.
The Jigi Asiwaju initiative, originally introduced by President Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State governor, continues to serve as a symbol of people-centered leadership, bringing healthcare closer to the people and restoring hope, one life at a time.
