Ondo Govt Issues 7-Day Ultimatum to Traders Over Illegal Street Trading in Alagbaka
The Ondo State Government has declared a crackdown on illegal markets and street trading in the Alagbaka area of Akure, issuing a seven-day ultimatum for traders to vacate the location or face legal sanctions.
In a public notice released by the Ministry of Environment, the government expressed concern over the growing presence of unauthorized markets and street trading activities within the Alagbaka axis, describing the situation as a threat to environmental hygiene, public safety, and smooth traffic flow in the state capital.
Dr. Tob Loko, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, noted that the proliferation of street traders in the area has resulted in heightened waste generation and indiscriminate littering, creating an eyesore in a zone that houses major government establishments.
“This development is unacceptable and will no longer be tolerated. The activities of these traders not only disrupt traffic and compromise safety, but they also deface the environment through improper waste disposal,” the statement read.
The Ministry has therefore directed all traders operating illegally along streets and other unauthorized areas within Alagbaka to leave within seven days from the date of the announcement. Failure to comply, according to the Ministry, will attract strict enforcement measures, with offenders being treated as violators of the state’s environmental laws.
“At the expiration of this ultimatum, anyone found violating this directive will face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law,” the commissioner warned.
The government called on all affected individuals and groups to comply promptly in the interest of maintaining orderliness and a healthy environment in the state capital.
