***Regent to Be Installed Sunday
The community of Obaile and its adjoining settlements in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State are currently immersed in age-old traditional rites following the passing of their revered monarch, the Oloba of Obaile, His Royal Majesty Oba Joseph Oluwadare Agunbiade.
Oba Agunbiade, a first-class monarch, was a towering figure in the traditional institution of Ondo State and beyond. His death has cast a solemn pall over Obaile and neighboring areas including Owode, Araromi, and Utamo (popularly known as Shasha), where normal life has temporarily come to a halt in his honour.
In line with tradition, shops, markets, and business outlets have remained closed since the commencement of the mourning rites. A significant ritual act—the trimming of sacred “Igi Ogun” trees believed to hold ancestral significance—has been carried out in Obaile, Owode, and Araromi, symbolizing the official start of the mourning period and preparation for the next phase of transition.
On Sunday, May 11, the Elegbe and Egiri cultural groups—renowned for their roles in ancestral rites—stormed Obaile in a colorful yet solemn procession. Led by Chief Victor Adewale, the Agbaakin of Igoba, they performed the ancient ritual known as “killing the silence,” which involves striking stones together to awaken spiritual consciousness and invite the ancestors to guide the community through the transition.
Speaking to reporters, the Elemo of Obaile, High Chief Gbemisayo Oluwatimilehin, confirmed that the week-long rites will climax on Friday, May 16, with the closure of the popular Shasha Market.
“The market, a major trading center in Akure North Local Government Area, will remain shut to express deep respect for the departed king and to preserve the sanctity of these traditional observances,” he said.
He also disclosed that, in line with custom, a regent will be installed on Sunday, May 18, to oversee the affairs of the town and hold the royal stool in trust until a new Oloba is selected and crowned.
“The regency period is seen as a time of reflection, guidance, and continuity—particularly for the royal family and kingmakers,” the Elemo noted.
As the people of Obaile mourn their monarch and prepare for the next chapter in their royal history, tributes have continued to pour in from across Ondo State. Those who have paid their respects include; Hon. Olumuyiwa Adu, Senator Niyi Adegbomire (representing Ondo Central Senatorial District), Derin Adesida Member (representing Akure North/South Federal Constituency), Executive Director of Corporate Services, NDDC, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, Hon. Ogunbolude Johnson (Chairman, Akure North LGA), Sheikh Dauda Ajigbotoluwa Alimi (Chief Imam of Obaile), and Oba Oluwagbemiga Olofin-Adimula (Arulewolasi III) , the Iralepo of Isinkan Kingdom.
In his condolence message, the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olayide Adelami, described the late monarch as “a people’s king who conducted himself with utmost dignity and unpretentious humility throughout his 39-year reign.”
“Though his passing is painful, we are comforted by the fact that Kabiyesi lived a life of impact and excellence. He was a candid leader, a responsible father, and a respectable monarch who led his people with courageous openness and commanding charisma. He will be sorely missed,” Adelami stated.
