……as Security agents enforce calmness in Akure.
Hoodlums yesterday broke into Okitipupa correctional centre (formerly known as Nigerian Prisons) in Ondo State, setting inmates free while critical public buildings like police divisional station, Okitipupa Division of High Court and Okitipupa local government Secretariat were also ransacked and razed.
SUNSHINETRUTH learnt that no fewer than 58 inmates escaped from the prison break during the attack that is allegedly part of the ongoing #EndSars protest that had been hijacked by miscreants.
It was gathered that one vehicle was burnt and several items were destroyed at the prison.
A resident of the town, Mr Iyiola Okeriola, told SaharaReporters that the mob had earlier razed Okitipupa Local Government secretariat during the attack.
He said, “The policemen were trying to enforce curfew in the town when the mob got enraged and went to the station and set it ablaze.
“Some thugs who have political motivation have hijacked the protests and are currently fomenting trouble.”
Not less than 50 motorcycles seized by the police and parked in the station were released by the mob.
This comes less than a day after some angry youth attacked another police station in Akure and set the facility on fire.
Another set of angry citizens had earlier destroyed the Special Anti-Robbery Squad facility along Oda Road in Akure, the state capital.
Also in Akure yesterday, the Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa campaign office located near Akure local government Secretariat on Ilesa garage road was set ablaze by unknown thugs.
The hoodlums had earlier on Wednesday this week ransacked and razed down the state Secretariats of the PDP and the APC in Akure, which led to political tension in the capital city until security operatives were deployed to strategic locations to maintain law and order.
Tee-Leo Ikoro, spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, who confirmed the attack, said the police are yet to estimate the total value of items damaged during the attack.
SUNSHINETRUTH correspondent who went round some places in Akure yesterday observed that relative calm has returned to the capital city as some vehicles and okada riders were seen moving around for the first time since Monday while evening commercial activities were observed at some filling stations and some junctions.
Security operatives also prevented further looting of shops in parts if Akure by thugs.
Security operatives had dismantled roadblocks mounted by protesters and free roads in Akure but the 24hours curfew declared by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is still on force and yet to be relaxed.
