The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has described Chief Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti as a rare symbol of patriotism, courage, and integrity, whose life of selfless service continues to serve as a guiding light for generations of Nigerians.
Governor Aiyedatiwa made these remarks on Saturday in Akure during the second edition of the Chief Reuben Fasoranti Public Service Lecture, organised by the Ondo State Chapter of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association, in commemoration of the elder statesman’s 99th birthday.
Speaking at the Multi-Purpose Auditorium of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, venue of the event, the Governor extolled the virtues of the Afenifere leader, describing his life as a true embodiment of the Yoruba Omoluabi ethos.
“What we are celebrating today is not merely the number of years lived, but the substance and impact of those years. Chief Fasoranti stands as an icon, one of the brightest lights in our nation, whose journey reflects exemplary service, courage, conviction, and an unwavering devotion to humanity,” Governor Aiyedatiwa stated.
He added that it was only fitting to commemorate such a milestone with a public lecture, given Chief Fasoranti’s enduring contributions to education, leadership, and cultural preservation in Nigeria.
Reflecting on the theme of the lecture, “Wanted: A Strong and United Yoruba Race as Panacea for Reviving the Vanishing Yoruba Values and Culture”, the Governor described it as both timely and deeply thought-provoking. He expressed concern over the steady erosion of cultural values among the Yoruba people and called for concerted efforts to preserve their heritage.
“We must recognise the significance of our traditions, customs, and values in shaping our identity and guiding our actions. As a people, we cannot afford to deviate from this noble trajectory,” he warned.
He advocated for increased cultural education and awareness among the youth, including intergenerational dialogue to ensure the transmission of values. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage in Ondo State by supporting initiatives that preserve and promote Yoruba culture, arts, and traditions.
“On behalf of the government and good people of Ondo State, I say happy 99th birthday to Pa Fasoranti. May your life continue to be celebrated, and may your legacy forever inspire us all,” the Governor concluded.
