FUTA Students Under Siege of Armed Robbers

Feb 9, 2024

Students of the federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA are now under the siege of armed robbers.

Students living off-campus at FUTA North gate in Akure the Ondo State capital in the last one month have been on persistent attacks by the men of the underworld.
They are being maimed and their belongings including phones and laptops are being carted away at gun points.
The Students said all complaints to the State Police command and FUTA authority have yielded no result as they claimed “they appear insensitive.”
Findings show that there are over fifteen thousand (15, 000) students in FUTA and the school can only accommodate five thousand (5, 000) with priority on the new intakes and final year students.
This leaves about ten thousand students (75% of the student population) to look for accommodation outside the school premises especially at the FUTA North gate without security arrangements by the school authority, the communities and the police.
This has seriously exposed the students to grave danger, as attacks by armed robbers are now order of the day.
Attacks had happened at many lodges including Awero and Apata ayeraye.
Last night, the armed robbers visited Awero hostel, destroyed doors to various rooms and went away with Students’ belongings unchallenged.
Students said police at okuta elerinla station were contacted while the attack was going on but couldn’t do anything. “And the armed robbers had a field day!”
“What we need is police protection, unfortunately, we are left in the cold.” A student said
As at the time of filling this report on Friday morning, FUTA students are protesting the incessant attacks, a situation that has led to traffic congestion on Akure – Ilesha expressway.
Motorists are now making a detour through Ipinsa, a neighbouring community.
