An Akure magistrate court has sentenced a 36 year-old woman, Mrs Opeyemi Omoyemi to four and a half years in prison for inflicting injuries on a 12 year old Joel Sunday.
Sunday was alleged to have stolen meat in her pot of soup.
Her counsel, Mr Folusho Kayode had prayed for leniency saying she is the one solely responsible for the well being and education of the 12 year old boy for the past four years and also a mother of two.
Delivering judgment, the magistrate, Mrs Oluwafunmilayo Edwin sentenced the defendant to 3 and a half years imprisonment on the first count charge, unlawful causing bodily harm and a year imprisonment for lack of care for a minor.
Another charge on trafficking in persons has been adjourned till April for hearing.
Reacting, the prosecutor, Mrs Catherine Ogunjebi praised the judgement saying it will serve as a deterrent to others.
The defence counsel, Folusho Kayode promised to appeal the judgment.
The ministry of women affairs in Ondo State has taken over the responsibility of the woman’s two kids.
