The Umuokpo Autonomous Community in Emeabiam, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, has conferred a chieftaincy title on Prince Edison Okpoko, popularly known as Okpokoson, in recognition of his contributions to community development and peacebuilding.

The ceremony, which held on January 5, 2026, drew family members, friends, community leaders and well-wishers. Prince Okpoko was honoured with the title Madukaejiga I of Umuokpo Autonomous Community by the traditional ruler, His Royal Majesty, Eze Eunan, Okpo I of Umuokpo.

The title Madukaejiga, which underscores the belief that human agency remains the driving force behind meaningful achievements, was described by community members as befitting, given Okpoko’s longstanding commitment to the growth and stability of Emeabiam.

Speaking at the event, a titled holder and daughter of the community, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, also known as Ada Owere I and Ada Emeabiam II, described the honour as well deserved, citing the new chief’s loyalty, mediatory skills and passion for communal harmony.

“Chief Okpoko has consistently shown love and dedication to the peace and progress of Emeabiam. He is widely respected for his ability to mediate and foster understanding among different interest groups within the community,” she said.

Okpoko is also noted for his deep knowledge of the history of the Emeabiam Rubber Estate and the protracted disputes involving the community and successive Imo State governments. His familiarity with these issues has earned him the informal description as an “encyclopedia” of the estate’s history.

The colourful ceremony featured cultural displays and a women-only raffle draw that added excitement to the event.

The raffle, sponsored by Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu, saw participants win items including bags of rice and Ankara fabrics.

Community leaders expressed optimism that Chief Edison Okpoko, Madukaejiga I, will continue to play a stabilising role in the affairs of Emeabiam, contributing to unity, development and peaceful coexistence.
