In a significant development ahead of the next electoral cycle, an aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Prince Akintayo Olokunboro, has formally withdrawn from the race for the House of Representatives seat representing Akure North and South Federal Constituency, throwing his support behind the party’s consensus arrangement.
Speaking with journalists in Akure, Olokunboro said his decision followed consultations among party leaders and stakeholders, stressing that unity within the party must take precedence over individual ambition.
He said “Before we decided to go fully into politics, we already had programmes targeting the people of Akure North and South. We will continue with those programmes and keep consulting with our leaders and elders to determine the next step forward.”
The aspirant acknowledged that the political climate within the party had become increasingly competitive, but warned against actions that could destabilize the system.
He noted “When things go berserk the way they are going now, it is the populace that suffers We want to avoid that at all costs, We don’t want a situation where a few decisions create chaos that affects everyone.”
Addressing concerns over the consensus process, Olokunboro dismissed claims of imposition, expressing confidence in the leadership of the state.
“The Governor is the first party leader of the state, and I believe he consulted widely with elders and party leaders before making that decision, the majority of us agreed to follow that direction, and that is exactly what we are doing.” he said
Despite stepping down, Olokunboro maintained that his commitment to grassroots development remains unchanged, hinting at ongoing efforts to build alliances across the constituency.
He also called for collaboration among political actors, emphasizing that community development should not be limited by political ambition.
“What we are trying to do is build a coalition of people who genuinely want development for Akure North and South, and even beyond, across the Central Senatorial District,” he said.
Offering advice to fellow aspirants, Olokunboro urged them to prioritize peace and stability over contestation.
