No fewer than 80 people that contravened environmental law in Ondo State have been arrested.
The arrest was made on Saturday during the monthly environmental exercise in Akure the state capital.
Peter Mbaba is one of the over 80 persons arrested for contravening the restriction order on human and vehicular movement during the three – hour monthly Environmental clean – up exercise.
The General Manager, Ondo State waste management authority, Mrs Ayo Adeyemo, accompanied by the permanent Secretary, ministry of environment, Mr Akin Asaniyan, CEO ZL Global Alliance, Mrs Abiola Bashorun and other officials went round Akure metropolis to ensure compliance to environmental sanitation guidelines.
The General Manager of the State waste management authority, Mrs Adeyemo, after the March edition of the monthly exercise said it is now compulsory for all drivers to have waste bins in their vehicles so as to curb littering of streets and highways.
Mrs Adeyemo who expressed satisfaction with the level of cleanliness in the state capital and its environs urged the people of the state to cleanliness their way of life.
According to her, it is important to observe the exercise so as to keep both the home and surroundings clean, adding that it would also quarantee healthy living for the people.
Mrs Adeyemo however frowned at the illegal dumping of waste along the drainage at the popular Oba Adesida road and indiscriminate waste disposal along walkways, which she described as unacceptable.
She said the State Government would leave no stone unturned in it’s quest to regain its pride of place as one of the cleanest states in Nigeria.
Also speaking,the permanent Secretary, Ondo State ministry of environment, Mr. Akin Asaniyan and the Chief Executive, ZL Global Alliance, Dr. Abiola Bashorun decried the habit of dumping refuse in drainages and waterways by some residents.
The chairman, Ondo State special committee on waste management, Mr Kehinde Badejo, harped on the need for prompt and proper waste disposal in safeguarding public health.
All apprehended offenders were charged to court for appropriate sanctions
