No fewer than 1,837,011 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates will be jostling for the 500,000 admission spaces in public universities in the country as the yearly examination starts today, May 6, 2022.
According to reports, the examination which is computer-based, will be conducted in 645 centres approved by the coordinating body, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) nationwide. The examination will last for nine days (from May 6 to 14).
Recall that, the board on April 9, 2022 conducted UTME mock for interested candidates to get familiar with the main examination. No fewer than 175,000 candidates were said to have participated in the mock examination.
It was gathered that, of the 1,837,011 registered candidates, 1,769,197 registered for UTME and 100,153 registered for the direct entry examination.
Last year, the board registered 1,338,687 candidates for the UTME and 75,328 for direct entry.
JAMB through its Head, Public Affairs and Protocols (PAP), Dr. Fabian Benjamin highlighted some rules for the candidates sitting for its examination.
Dr. Fabian Benjamin warned candidates against bringing electronic gadgets and other unauthorised materials like eyeglasses (unless recommended); USB, fez caps, calculator, tape recorder, camera, wristwatches, bangles, and cell phones, among others, into the examination hall.
He stressed that these items remained banned in the examination hall during the conduct of the UTME.
While the 2022 UTME commences for young Nigerians seeking to gain admission into various tertiary institutions, activities of public universities in the country have been grounded since February 14, 2022 due to Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.
