How I won the British Chevening Scholarship – John Eperetun, FUTA ALUMNUS

My Name is John Eperetun an Alumnus of the Urban and Regional Planning Department of the Federal University of Technology Akure. In September 2020, I applied for the British Chevening Scholarship in order to actualise my long-life dream of studying a Core-Development course to realise my goal of becoming an International Development expert to help develop sustainable and workable solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges particularly in the area of WASH, Education and Conflicts.


Fast forward to August 2021, Out of a pool of 8,000 applications received from Nigeria, I am glad to emerge as one of 50 outstanding Scholars to receive the Chevening Award.

Hence, I’m Incredibly Delighted to announce that I have been awarded the Chevening Scholarship to study for a M.Sc. in International Development at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom a Top 30 ranked University for Development Studies in the World.

The Chevening Scholarship is a highly prestigious scholarship funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Established in 1983, Chevening has over 50,000 Alumni from across 160 countries in the World.

The Chevening Award provides Future leaders with the invaluable opportunity to develop themselves personally, professionally and academically through Postgraduate studies in the UK.

In order to secure the scholarship, I utilised my relevant professional and volunteering experiences as a Development Worker, Urban Planner and Volunteer to write the essays and equally secured one unconditional offer of admission from my three selected UK universities.

To apply for the Chevening Scholarship, you will need to meet the following requirements;

  1. Have a minimum of two years working experience equivalent to (2800 working hours) in a full-time, part-time, unpaid, volunteering or internship positions.
  2. Write a compelling essay of 500 words each on leadership, professional networking, study plan and career plan.
  3. Secure an unconditional offer of admission from any UK university.
  4. Provide two reference letters from individuals who know you in an academic or professional capacity.

Chevening is a fully funded scholarship that covers tuition, travel and living expenses amongst other costs.
